Ehon: The Artist and the Book in Japan
Ehon: The Artist and the Book in Japan
THIS EXHIBITION is possibly the largest display of Japanese book art on show (over 200 items) and is drawn exclusively from the collections of The New York Public Library. It encompasses 1200 years of history and includes Buddhist sutras, painted manuscripts, portraits, landscapes, calligraphic verse, and photographic books, with related drawings and woodblock prints. Precursors of present-day animé and works by internationally known artists such as Hiroshi Sugimoto and Takashi Murakami are also included. An emphasis on materials, techniques, and an extreme range of visual styles gives additional depth to the display.

BATIK REFERS to wax-resist dyeing which produces kain batik, batik cloth, primarily in the Indonesian island of Java. There the batik textile tradition was also associated with court art from the sultanates of Jogjakarta and Surakarta in east Java, who were heirs to the Kingdom of Mataram (1582-1755). Today batik is no longer confined to Java alone. Significant developments in the last 200 years have made batik a key trade item worldwide.
