ALTHOUGH THE ISLAND has been long-renowned for its natural beauty, the art of Sri Lanka seems to have been far less celebrated – or even studied – than that of other Asian countries sharing Theravada Buddhist culture such as Burma or Cambodia. One reason is that, even though the island was obviously much influenced culturally by its nearby neighbour, its art has tended to be lumped together by foreign scholars with that of South India.

Chalo! India: A New Era of Indian Art

‘CHALO’ IS HINDI for ‘Let’s go!’ and this exhibition at the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo invites you to do just that – to go and discover the explosion of creativity and vitality that can be seen in Indian contemporary art today. The exhibition has more 100 works by 27 artists and artist groups from all over India, including the major cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Mysore; as well as Vadodara in Gujarat, which is home to the respected Arts and Fine Arts Faculty of the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda (MSU). Encompassing a broad range of media, including painting, sculpture, photography and installation, this exhibition examines the current trends and movements in Indian contemporary art.

The Great Wall Revisited: A Tale of Two Photographs

HUAIROU COUNTY, two hours’ drive north of Beijing. It is 5 am when William Lindesay leaves his farmhouse at the foot of the Great Wall. The farmers in this rural village are still fast asleep. Armed with his 25-year-old scratched Olympus and Leica cameras, a tripod and a folder of black-and-white photography from the turn of the 20th century, Lindesay climbs a trail into the mountains for a day’s detective work at the Great Wall.
